At long last, Devon Allman returns to the spotlight today to announce Miami Moon, the Southern rock torchbearer’s first solo album in eight years. Set to release on August 16 via his independent label Create Records, this new project will find the figurehead reworking his process alongside a true studio supergroup of some of the finest in funk and fusion. This dispatch arrives in the wake of Allman’s jaw-dropping world-record run of 50 shows in 50 states in 49 days, amid the artist’s summer kick-off tour with the Allman Betts Band.

The Allman descendant’s return to the front features accompaniment from a truly legendary backing ensemble, comprising George Porter Jr. of The Meters on bass, Dumpstaphunk’s Ivan Neville on keyboards, Lettuce’s Adam Deitch on drums, Karl Denson of The Rolling Stones on saxophone and Jackson Stokes on guitar. Together, the group recontextualized Allman’s creativity, allowing bold new moves and turns from his traditional sound in the hallowed halls of Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida, which also produced such foundational precursors as The Allman Brothers’ Eat a Peach and Derek and the Dominoes’ Layla. Behind the boards, the project features Tom Hambridge, who has brought the blues to bear with Buddy Guy and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram and terms Miami Moon a “masterpiece.”

“Making the Miami Moon record with these legendary musicians has been a high point of my career,” Allman offers on his latest project in a release. “They brought these songs to life with their masterful playing and timeless feels. As for the approach, a couple things were different this time: First, writing the songs on bass guitar was a first for me and allowed the grooves to be the main focus. Also, letting go of some previous, limiting thought processes allowed some of my other influences to enter the chat for the first time such as Curtis Mayfield, Sade, The Cure, Steely Dan…among others. I believe you can hear some flourishes of those true loves on this album.”

“Additionally, recording in the same hallowed halls where Dad made the Eat a Peach record and where Uncle Duane and Eric Clapton recorded the Layla record,” the artist reflects, “made for a very special setting for us all to work in. We kept it fun and we kept it funky…..we ordered Cuban food, watched the NBA and jammed in a circle for days. In a world where you can make records in the basement or your bedroom, I’m so grateful to have done this record in a classic manner.”

“White Horse,” the lead single from Allman’s forthcoming project, and an official music video will premiere exclusively via Relix on Thursday, June 6. The track will release to all streaming platforms on Friday, June 7, and is available to pre-save nowMiami Moon is also available to pre-save and pre-order.
